At Rose Hill Farms, we use these perpetually smiling woolyballs in all of our orchards and they continue to consistently amaze us with their capacity to control grass level and weeds as well as invasive poison oak and blackberry bushes. They work as a team with our geese herds, the sheep eating tougher grass and bushes and the geese grazing on the new sprouts in tree circles and paths.
If you are looking for a small and easy to care for addition to your farm or backyard then the Babydoll Southdown might just be the sheep for you! Naturally polled and inherently docile with exceptional meat and wool production, these endearing animals are wonderful start for children, and a great choice for beginning famers and experienced shepherds alike.
Sheep occupy an important niche in a self-sustainable farm as steady providers of wool, meat, and outstanding landscape maintenance. Following our tradition of raising Heritage animals breeds, we procured several ewes and two rams of a traditional English breed called the Southdown Babydoll Sheep soon after starting the farm. Over the years, our flock has grown ever larger as we explore the many benefits of this unique breed.
Our Babydoll sheep are ideal for 4H projects, as picturesque lawn mowers, or just as lovely cuddly pets! We also sell registered sheep for breeding or starting your own flock: All our sheep are registered with NABSSAR . For our current available stock, please visit the page below.
Unlike the larger, modernized Southdown sheep, Babydolls were selected and bred from the true, old strain of English sheep that thrived on and fertilized the chalky South Down hills of Sussex. Known for their outstanding meat and carcass quality as well as fine wool, the Babydolls also possess the unique trait of being one of the smallest sheep breeds in the world (adults weigh from 70-150 lbs). This makes them ideal for use in orchards and vineyards since their short stature dissuades them from feeding on higher trees or shrubs.
